Juices & Smoothies

Juices and smoothies are a hot topic right now. Especially with the number of Nutribullets received as Christmas presents it seems! There is some controversy about the pros and cons of juicing and blending rather than chewing and eating. Of course there is no doubt that chewing your food is the best option but there are a few situations where a small smoothie can be useful, for example where a person has a very busy lifestyle, rushing out the door every morning without breakfast and is not getting enough nutrients in the day, in the case of kids refusing to eat fruit and veg and lacking nutrients as a result, and also in the case of the elderly where appetite and digestion may be stopping them getting all they need. It can be a great place to get in some extra nutrients, in the form of powders or liquids, like our favourite TerraNova additions, Green PH Alkaline powder or Life Drink, or for kids maybe a probiotic or even for an elderly person a liquid multivitamin. And even herbs can be added secretly!

Top Tips:

Always try to use a lot of veg in juices and smoothies, kale and spinach work great. For kids, light greens like romaine lettuce and  pak choi go undetected in a smoothie, a great way to add hidden greens without them knowing! Other additions like cinnamon or vanilla can be good also. Don’t add any sweetners like honey, syrup. Keep frozen banana slices in the freezer for adding. Add a few icecubes when blending. Add some water as part of your liquid.
